Apprentice Ceremony #4: Uppton Paggles - The Verge

(received via email from Mistress Alysoun de Roos)
Here is the ceremony I recently used to take Isabel Moundoughter as an apprentice. Since we don't work in a guild format, I took this from manor court records. In addition to the laurel and apprentice, this form needs a clerk and one or more pledges (we had Charles Oakley, Siobhan, Johann, and John ap Wynne.)

Private!

Clerk: To be entered in the roll of the Court of Upton-Paggles on the Saturday next before the Feast of St. Benedict of Nursia in the reign of Bardolph and Brigh:

" At this court the Lady grants to Isabel Moundoughter a virgate of land which was held of our forefathers to have and to hold said virgate of land in villeinage to historical re-creation according to the custom of the manor, doing for it all the customs and services in everything just as the aforesaid Isabel is accustomed to do.'"

[The apprentice comes forward and the laurel extends a rod (the verge). The apprentice holds one end while the laurel holds the other.]

Laurel: "I, Alysoun, grant to Isabel Moundoghter a virgate of land to have and to hold according to the custom of the manor."

[Apprentice lets go of her end of the rod and stands or bows.]

Clerk: "For having this grant, the aforesaid Isabel will give the Lady works of craft and/or scholarship, half to be paid at the Feast of St. Michael next after the making of this enrollment and the other half at the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord next following and she shall maintain all her handworks and study in as good as state as she has pursued them or better."

(short pause)

Clerk: "For the aforesaid works as well as for the study, the aforesaid Isabel has pledges-Who stands pledge for Isabel?"

[First pledge steps forward]

Pledge: "I, Mistress Siobhan, so do pledge

[and additional words of her choosing to the praise of the apprentice]

[First pledge steps back. Other pledges follow the same form.]

Clerk: "Isabel is given livery of seisin"

[Laurel puts the belt around apprentice]

Clerk: "and does fealty."

[Apprentice places her hands between laurel's hands]

Apprentice: "Hear this my Lady! I, Isabel, will be faithful and loyal to thee and faith to thee will bear of the tenement that I hold of thee and will be justiciable by thee in body and chattels. So help me God and his saints.
